How it works

Print, powder, press.

DTF (Direct-to-Film) prints your design onto a special carrier film with pigment ink, coats it with hot-melt adhesive powder, cures it, then heat-presses it onto the garment. Result: a full-color print with photographic detail and almost no hand.

01

Print to film

Your full-color art prints onto PET carrier film with CMYK + white pigment ink, no separations, no per-color setup.

02

Adhesive powder

While the ink is still wet, hot-melt adhesive powder dusts onto the print and bonds to the design only, not the background.

03

Cure

The film passes through a heat tunnel that melts the powder into a flexible, washable bond layer ready to transfer.

04

Heat press

Film positioned, heat press hits it at 320°F for 15 seconds, peel: and the design is permanently bonded to the garment.

Common questions

FAQ.

The questions we hear most from new DTF customers.

How is DTF different from regular heat transfer vinyl?

Vinyl heat transfer cuts a solid color of plastic from a sheet and presses it on. Great for bold one- or two-color text, terrible for any kind of detail. DTF prints your full-color art directly onto film with pigment ink, gradients, photos, hundreds of colors all in one transfer. The result feels like part of the shirt; vinyl always feels like a sticker.

Will DTF crack or peel after a few washes?

No, when it's done right. The hot-melt adhesive layer bonds at a molecular level into the fabric fibers, and the pigment ink is rated for 50+ machine wash cycles without significant fade or cracking. Wash inside-out in cold water for max longevity. The most common cause of premature failure is under-pressing, and we don't under-press.

Can you really print just a few pieces?

Yes: three pieces is the minimum, with no setup fee on top. Small-run pricing is higher per piece than a 50-piece run of the same design (the per-press time still costs us about the same), but for sample runs, gifts, or one-off event merch, it’s the only method that makes economic sense.

How does DTF compare to screen printing on cost?

Below ~72 pieces, DTF beats screen printing on cost because there's no setup. Above ~72, screen printing pulls ahead because the per-press cost goes near zero on the press but DTF still has a per-transfer cost. We'll quote both side-by-side when your run is in the gray zone.

Can I do different art on every piece in the same order?

Yes, and that's one of DTF's superpowers. Send 50 unique designs, we'll print 50 unique transfers, no upcharge for variety. Great for staff names, custom gifts, run-of-show event merch, or test runs across a design system.

What art files do you need for DTF?

PNG with a transparent background at 300 DPI is the gold standard, what you see is what gets printed. Vector files (AI/EPS/PDF) are even better because they scale infinitely. JPGs work but introduce edge artifacts; we'll clean them up but the result depends on the source quality.

Are DTF transfers safe for kids' clothing and resale?

Yes: pigment inks are CPSIA-compliant and meet Prop 65 standards. The transfers are flexible, breathable, and won't separate from the garment in normal wear or wash. Perfectly safe for infant/toddler/youth garments and meets retail requirements for branded apparel programs.
